For the first time in program history UT Permian Basin Football is 3-0 after easily handling their first road test of the spring, defeating Western New Mexico 31-6. The Falcons held the Mustangs to just 199 total yards of offense and only twice allowed the Mustangs across midfield.
D'Ondre Robinson became the Falcons all-time interceptions leader in the fourth quarter, picking off the Mustangs twice including a pick-six to seal the game in the fourth, and now has four on the season.
It was special teams that got the Falcons going in the first quarter.
Hayden Kelly blocked and recovered a punt that set the Falcons up inside the red zone. Three plays later,
Clayton Roberts found
MJ Link for a 10-yard strike, Link's third touchdown reception of the season. It was special teams again putting in the work on the next score. After a Mustang touchdown,
Trent Ward blocked the extra point and took it all the way back for two points in favor of the Falcons.
The defense flipped the field with a turnover forced by
Donta Stuart, once again setting the offense up with short field.
Hayden Decossas knocked through a 33-yard field goal on the following drive, his first of the season, putting the Falcons up 12-6. On their next offensive possession, the Falcons found the end zone via the big play. Roberts hit
Baylon Ware for a 49-yard strike across the middle to push the score to 19-6. The touchdown was Robert's 10
th in just three games and Ware's fourth of the year. Just before the half,f the Falcons got two more points on a safety after the Mustang quarterback was called for intentional grounding in the end zone.
The Falcons ended the third and started the fourth quarter with a 16-play, 82-yard drive eating up 8:52, capped off by the second field goal of the day by Decossas. On the ensuing Mustang possession, Robinson picked off a pass on the 43 and sprinted up the left sideline for the touchdown, putting a stamp on the 31-6 victory.
Roberts threw for two touchdowns but was held to just 80 yards battling constant 20-25 mph winds.
Donta Stuart led the Falcons with nine tackles, including one for a loss.
John O'Kelley had five tackles, including his first sack of the year and forced a pair of fumbles. Freshman
Victor Idusuyi recorded his first career sack.
The Falcons have outscored their opponents 118-40 in three games this season. Going back to last season the Falcons have won five of their last six, scoring at least 30 points in each. The Falcon secondary has eight interceptions this season through just three games. Last season the team set a single season record with 11 picks.
