Arellano Reaches Five Times, Araiza Drives in Two to Close Opening Weekend

Aracely Araiza and April Arellano continued their hot starts at the plate Saturday, with Arellano reaching base five times while Araiza drove in a pair of runs over two games.  Arellano is now hitting .500 on the season for UT Permian Basin while Araiza leads the team with five RBI on the young season.

The Falcons looked to strike early in the first game of the day against Newman.  They did just that with an Emily Andress single followed by Arellano being hit by a pitch to put two on with one out.  A wild pitch moved the pair over with Araiza at the plate.  She reached on an infield single to bring home Andress and take the early lead.  That's all the Falcon offense could push across as they were held hitless the rest of the game as the Jets pushed across nine runs for the 9-1 final.

In the second game of the day, and final of the afternoon, the Falcons got multi-hit games from Alice Marion and Mia Quintero.  Marion plated a run in the fourth with a bases loaded single to cut the Washburn lead to two.  In the seventh, Araiza drove home Arellano with a single to left.  The Falcons couldn't get any closer as they fell 6-2.

Arellano reached base four times in the second game, with a double, hit by pitch and pair of walks.  Quintero doubled in the Falcons rally in the fourth, the first double of her collegiate career.

Abby Cousins dazzled in the circle, allowing just one earned run in three innings in the second game.  The sophomore finished the weekend with the lowest ERA on the staff.

The Falcons are back in action next weekend as they head to Allen, TX for another four-game weekend.  Full times and schedules are available on UTPBFALCONS.com or by downloading the UTPB Athletics App.
