Game Recap: Softball |

Bullpen Brilliant on Opening Day of McCorkle Classic

It was the bullpen that shined on Sunday for UT Permian Basin Softball, combining for 6.2 innings and only allowing one earned run.  Abrie Castillo silenced the bats of No. 9 Angelo State in the first game, striking out five over 4.1 innings and gave up just one earned run.

In game two, it was freshman and Odessa native Sierra Camacho who dominated the Texas A&M International line-up.  She continued her strong start to the season with her third shutout appearance of the year and kept the Falcons within striking distance of the Dustdevils.  She lowered her season ERA to 3.32, the lowest on the team.

After a quiet game one against the No. 9 Rambelles, where the Falcons were shutout 8-0, the top of the order carried the team in the second game.  Trailing 5-0 to the Dustdevils, Valerie Gonzalez doubled into the left field corner for two runs to get the Falcons on the board.  Two batters later, April Arellano doubled in Gonzalez and Emily Andress to cut the deficit to one.  Gonzalez drove in another run an inning later on a ground ball to tie the score at five.

The Dustdevils scored three times in the bottom of the fourth to retake the lead.  The Falcons battled, scoring one in the fifth on a double by Choco Munoz but that's as close as they'd get falling 8-6 in a tight battle.

The top of the order of Gonzalez, Andress, and Arellano combined for four hits, five RBI, and a pair of doubles against the Dustdevils.  Andress is tied for the team lead with six hits and leads the team with a .429 batting average as a freshman.  Kortlyn Brown added a double among a pair of hits while scoring twice.  Alice Marion and Rylie Reed also picked up hits with Marion scoring a run.  Mia Quintero scored for the first time as a Falcon, coming in on Munoz's RBI-double.

The Falcons have a quick turnaround, facing No. 4 UT Tyler at 10:15 in the morning and follow it up with another match-up with Texas A&M International after.  Download the UTPB Athletics App to follow the team all season long.
