It took the last minute of double-overtime but UT Permian Basin Men's Soccer found a way to make it to the Lone Star Conference playoffs in a thriller on Senior Day.
Senior
Salvador Vargas Ramos got the offense going early in the match. In the sixth minute he found the net off an assist from
Matias Pereira for the 1-0 lead. Vargas Ramos scored once again just two minutes later.
Victor Machado passed back the ball perfectly to the boot of Vargas Ramos and he put it just below the crossbar for the 2-0 lead in the eighth minute of action. After a Chaps penalty kick goal the Falcons returned the favor in the 33
rd minute. Vargas Ramos hit the penalty kick to complete the hat trick in the first half on Senior Day.
The hat trick marks the fifth one in program history and the first one since October of 2017. It is the first career hat trick for Vargas Ramos in a Falcon uniform.
The Chaps tied the match in the second half to send it into overtime. Neither team could get their offense going in the first overtime as no shots were taken by either team. In the second overtime the Falcons controlled the period. The Falcons took seven shots including one that went off the left post early in the overtime. With 56 seconds left in the match, senior
Ollie Grundy set a cross in the box and it went off a defender and into the net for the goal and the 4-3 victory for the Falcons.
The Falcons had to win tonight's match and get help from other teams to make the LSC playoffs. St. Mary's had to defeat Texas A&M International and UT Tyler had to beat DBU. UT Tyler came back and scored twice in the second half and won in overtime to complete the comeback and get the Falcons in the playoffs.
Salvador Vargas Ramos led the Falcons with the hat trick on four shots on goal.
Matias Pereira and
Victor Machado each added an assist. Pereira also had a shot on goal.
Alfonso Aragon made three saves on the night.
