Falcon Defense Stymies No. 6 ASU’s Offense

UT Permian Basin Volleyball held one of the best offenses in the nation to one of their worst nights of the season Thursday night in Odessa.  The Falcons held No. 6 Angelo State to just a .198 hitting percentage and forced 22 errors on the night.  The defense had the most digs against the Rambelles this season and forced 182 attempts, their second most in a match this season.

The Falcons played from behind early as the Rambelles went on a 5-1 run halfway through the first set.  They never blinked and on the strength of four Rambelle errors and a pair of kills by Chandra Reed tied the set at 22.  Another Rambelle error gave the Falcons the lead, which Erika Lozano put to good use with back-to-back aces to close the set.

Sets two and three went to the Rambelles after the Falcon offense struggled to get going themselves.  They righted the ship in the fourth and took an early three-point lead.  After trading points the Rambelles went up late and eventually took the fourth set and the match.

The Falcons combined for 93 digs on the night, their most in a four-set match this season.  Daylee Doggett led the Falcons with 17, as five players reached double figures.  Analise Lucio recorded another double-double with 29 assists and 13 digs.  Isela Murillo had 15 digs along with seven kills, while Lozano had 11 digs and Stephanie Sanchez pitched in 10.  Chandra Reed had a stellar offensive night with nine kills and starred defensively with five blocks.  The Falcons combined for 14 blocks on the night.

The Falcons are back in action Saturday against Lubbock Christian in a game between the fourth and fifth seeds in the Lone Star Conference.  Download the UTPB Athletics App for the latest news all season long.
