Jordan Horn once again carried the UT Permian Basin offense with 15 points, while
Adam Rivera dominated the paint pulling down a career-high 13 rebounds Thursday at No. 11 St. Edward's. Their efforts weren't enough as the Falcons fell 86-65 to one of the top offensive teams in Division II.
It was a battle of the long ball in the beginning, with the first four buckets coming from three-point range. A pair of threes by Horn and a
Luka Juricki layup erased an early seven-point deficit and put the Falcons up a point. The Hilltoppers answered, slowly building an eight-point lead. Three points from
Jay Workman and
Wesley Hayes, along with baskets by Rivera and
Malik Brikat drew the Falcons to back within striking distance.
Tyler Jarolik knocked down a three and Workman followed with a jumper and the Falcons led 33-30. The teams were poised to head into the half tied, but a half court buzzer-beating three by the Hilltoppers sent them into the locker room up 38-35.
The Falcons battled early in the second half, but a 30-4 run by the Hilltoppers ended any chances of a road upset. Freshman
Quinntez Grimes had a big second half, scoring all 11 of his points in the half.
Horn finished the night with 15 points, knocking down four three-pointers, while grabbing eight boards off the bench. Rivera led both teams with his 13 rebounds and added four points.
The Falcons are back in action tomorrow as they look to upset No. 11 St. Edward's with tip-off scheduled for 5 PM.
