Jada Berry caught fire in the second half scoring nine of her team-high 12 points to power the offense, but it wasn't enough as the Falcons fell to No. 22 West Texas A&M 75-56 in the Falcon Dome.
Â
Both teams got on the board early and often as the Falcons (2-5) controlled most of the first quarter.
Rory Carter got the scoring started with a three-pointer. The Falcons would take a five-point lead in the quarter on a layup by
Karyssa Jackson and Berry gave the Falcons their largest lead of the night, a six-point lead on a three pointer. The Lady Buffs (5-1) closed out the quarter on an 11-3 run to give them a 27-20 lead.
Â
As offensive as the first quarter was, the second turned into a defensive struggle. The Falcons got multiple baskets from
Morgan Helgesen and a jumper from
Lauren Stallworth to end the second quarter trailing 39-27.
Â
In the third quarter, the Falcons found life in the last 2:30. Jackson hit a jump shot followed by a three from Berry and a layup by Jackson to head into the final quarter down 56-38. The Falcons biggest run in the fourth quarter was an 8-2 run in the middle of the quarter.
Nokoia White and
Ogechi Nwodo started the run with a layup each. Nwodo hit another layup and free throw while the last point of the run came on a White free throw. A layup by Berry brought the Falcons to within 15 but that was as close as they'd get.
Â
Berry led the offense with 12 points on the night while also grabbing five rebounds and added four assists.Â
Avalon Munoz led the team with six rebounds, assists with five, and three steals. White, Nwodo, and Jackson each had a block on the night.
Â
The Falcons will be back on the court against West Texas A&M in Canyon, TX at 2 PM on Saturday.
