Thornton Collects Five Hits as Falcons Rout ENM for First LSC Sweep

Garrett Thornton had a huge afternoon, going 5-for-5 as the Falcons collected 14 hits in an 18-6 rout of Eastern New Mexico.  The win completed a four-game sweep of the Greyhounds, the first sweep for the Falcons against a Lone Star Conference opponent since joining the conference in 2017.

Both offenses were sluggish for the first three games of the series with the Falcons (9-13) taking them by a combined score of 7-0.  That changed from the first at bat, as Michael Clapperton launched a lead-off home run.  The floodgates opened from there as the Falcon offense came to life.  Thornton singled to bring home Lincoln Choate to go up 2-0.  Two batters later, Devin Ferrari's bases loaded single scored Nick Hernandez for the 3-0 lead.  Nick Schnopp brought home two more on a single down the line.  An error allowed Joey Winkler and Pemron Burrows to score two more, and the Falcons led 7-0 after half an inning.

They added to their lead in the second.  Jonathan Bermudez brought home Thornton on a single to centerfield.  Bermudez scored later in the inning on a wild pitch for the ninth run of the ballgame.  Burrow's sacrifice fly later in the inning scored Ferrari once more for the 10-0 lead.  The Greyhounds (3-18) fought back in their half of the second with four runs to cut into the Falcon lead.

The Falcons answered with five more runs in the fifth.  Choate scored on an error and Winkler got an RBI on a hit by pitch.  Schnopp brought in another on a walk before Burrows reached on an error, allowing two runs to score.  In the fourth, Ferrari drove in a pair on a triple to right center.  Hernandez drove in the final run of the ballgame with a single in the fifth for the 18th run of the afternoon.

In addition to Thornton's five hits, Ferrari, Hernandez, and Bermudez each had multi-hit games.  Bermudez scored four times while Thornton and Ferrari each scored three times.  Ferrari and Schnopp had three RBI each to drive in the most runs.  Jeff Thoben, Danny Juarez, Luis Dominguez, and Spencer Cofer combined to allow just one run in relief over five innings while striking out seven.

The Falcons return home this Friday as they'll face Texas A&M – Kingsville with a four-game series at Roden Field.
