UT Permian Basin Softball dominated the final two games of their Lubbock trip, defeating Newman 4-2 in the first game and Southern Nazarene in the second game 7-3.
April Arellano had a big afternoon, collecting four hits, scoring twice and driving in a run.
Scoring did not start for either team until the Falcons (5-5) got the bats going in the bottom of the third.
Leslie Martinez scored Arellano on an RBI-single through the right side to give the Falcons the 1-0 lead. The Falcons once again got in the run column in the bottom of the fourth when
Lani Graft singled through the left side scoring
Jessica Gonzales for the 2-0 lead after four innings of play.
The Jets (0-5) tied the game in the top of the fifth, but the Falcons scored their final two runs in the bottom half of the fifth on a two-run single to left by Gonzales scoring
Valerie Gonzalez and
Alicia Marion for the 4-2 victory.
Gonzales went 1-3 with a run scored and two RBI.
Abrie Castillo (2-0) collected the complete game allowing five hits and striking out five Jets while walking one batter to get the victory.
In the second game, the Falcons kept the momentum going against the Storm (4-2). They got started early in the top of the first, putting up a four spot.
Choco Munoz got an RBI the patient way by drawing a walk scoring Gonzales. Arellano,
Nayeli Diaz, and Gonzalez followed with RBI singles to give the Falcons a 4-0 lead.
Southern Nazarene slowly chipped away at the Falcon lead as they got one run each in the first, third, and fourth innings to trail by one by the end of the fourth, 4-3.
The Falcons bats woke up again in the fifth. Arellano reached base on a ball hit to the catcher scoring Graft. Munoz scored on a steal attempt by Arellano to second and Gonzalez scored Arellano on a sacrifice bunt giving the Falcons a 7-3 lead they'd hold onto for the victory.
Abby Hernandez and
Lani Graft each had two hits while Graft scored twice.
Valerie Gonzalez went 1-3 and collected two RBI.
Abby Cousins (2-2) collected the win for the Falcons relieving
Marissa Salinas in the fourth. Cousins pitched 3.2 innings of shutout ball in allowing three hits in the victory.
The Falcons will square off again on Friday, Feb. 14 in Tucson Ariz. Facing off against California University of Pennsylvania at 11 AM in game one of a doubleheader. Game two will be against Fort Lewis at 1:30 PM.
