Abrie Castillo was brilliant, allowing just six hits over seven innings as she shutout Fort Lewis in the second half of the Falcon doubleheader on Friday, winning 3-0. The Falcon offense carried the team in the first game as they defeated California University of Pennsylvania 7-6.
The Falcon (7-5) offense broke out early, scoring five times in the top of the first inning.
Alicia Marion started things off with a single and moved to second on a sac bunt. She came into score on a single by
Leslie Martinez to give the Falcons the early lead. Martinez came into score on an error allowing
Lani Graft to reach. After a single and a walk to load the bases, Graft scored on a wild pitch to push the lead to 3-0.
Nayeli Diaz broke the game open with a two-run single and the Falcons led 5-0 after one. The Falcons added another run in the second on the strength of a
Marissa Salinas double to bring in
Abby Hernandez. The Vulcans began chipping away at the Falcon lead, with two in the third and fifth to make it a two-run ballgame. In their half of the fifth, the Falcons scored a crucial insurance run on a
Choco Munoz double to lead 7-4. The Vulcans cut into the lead with two more in the sixth but that was as close as they'd get as the Falcons held on for the win.
After a quiet first inning, the Falcon offense did damage in the second inning. Salinas got things going with a lead-off walk and advanced to third on a double by
Aracely Araiza. An error allowed Salinas to score for the first run of the game. Later in the inning
Sydney Bishop singled bringing in Araiza to go up 2-0. Castillo was brilliant allowing no more than one base runner all afternoon, keeping the Skyhawks off balance. In the seventh, a walk, single and hit by pitch loaded the bases for
Jessica Gonzales. Gonzales lofted a sac fly to left bringing in an insurance run and Castillo followed with a clean seventh for the win.
Diaz led the Falcons with a pair of RBI on the afternoon. Marion and Martinez were the only Falcons with multiple hits on the afternoon.
The Falcons are back in action tomorrow against Lindenwood and Simon Fraser.
