Following Sunday's big afternoon,
Marissa Salinas dominated the Univerisity of the Southwest. The junior threw a complete game shutout in the opening game of a doubleheader before leading the Falcons with six RBI and a grand slam in the second game. The Falcons scored 18 runs in the second game, the second most in program history, winning 18-0. The opening game was a pitchers duel that the Falcons won on a walk-off.
The Falcons (10-10) had opportunities all throughout the first game but couldn't capitalize early. In the second and third innings, they stranded runners in scoring position, and couldn't capitalize with the bases loaded in the fifth. Salinas was terrific all day, keeping the Mustangs (1-14) off the board and escaped second and third with no out in the fifth. The Falcons finally broke through in the seventh. With two outs,
Ashlynn Bradley ripped a double over the head of the left fielder. The very next pitch,
April Arellano pulled one into the corner to score Bradley for the walk-off double.
The Falcon offense got to work much more quickly in the second game, scoring four batters into the bottom of the first on a
Choco Munoz double. They added another run on a walk to
Ruby Sanchez with the bases loaded before
Sydney Bishop blew it open with a two-run single and a 4-0 lead. In the second, the Falcons sent 18 batters to the plate and scored 12 times to put the game away.
Valerie Gonzalez got things going with a lead-off triple. After loading the bases with one-out, Salinas blasted a grand slam to left to double the lead. The hitting didn't stop as they once again loaded the bases, and Gonzalez brought home two more on a single herself. Arellano singled on the next pitch, driving home a pair and expanding the lead. Salinas came up with the bases loaded again, and singled to right-center to score two more and pushing the lead to 14-0. Sanchez got another RBI on her second bases loaded walk of the game and Bishop singled to bring in Salinas for the final run of the inning. In the third,
La'Tina Norris crushed a two-run home run to center field for her first hit as a Falcon and the 18-0 lead would hold as the final.
Salinas finished the day with three hits and six RBI. The grand slam was her fifth of the season. Arellano had four hits, three runs scored and three RBI including the walk-off double in the first game. Gonzalez and Bishop had three hits a piece in the second game. Bishop had three RBI while Gonzalez, Arellano, Norris and Sanchez had two RBI each.
Choco Munoz was 2-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored.
In the circle the Falcons combined for 12 shutout innings and struck out eight as a staff. Salinas pitched the entire first game, struck out five and allowed six hits.
Abby Cousins,
Azul Munoz, and
Abrie Castillo combined for five shutout innings, only allowing three hits. Castillo earned the win, striking out three in two innings of work.
The Falcons are back in action Friday when they start off Lone Star Conference play with a doubleheader against Tarleton beginning at 4.
