Cousins Quiets #23 Tarleton's Bats in LSC Opener

Freshman Abby Cousins slowed down the bats of No. 23 Tarleton Friday night, striking out four over 5.2 innings of relief work.  Sydney Bishop had the big day at the plate, slugging a triple and a double in the first game of the doubleheader.  Their efforts weren't enough as the Falcons fell 9-1 in the opening game and 6-2 in the second game.

The Falcons (10-12, 0-2) fell behind early in the opening game, as the No. 23 Texans (15-4, 2-0) put six runs, four with two out.  They'd add a pair in the second before the Falcons got themselves on the board.  Bishop got the offense going with a double to left.  Ruby Sanchez worked a walk and Nayeli Diaz singled to load the bases.  Valerie Gonzalez walked, winning an 11-pitch battle to bring in the run and get the Falcons on the board.  The Falcons had opportunities, getting runners in scoring position in the first four innings, but couldn't cash in.  After allowing two runs in her first inning of work, Cousins settled down and only allowed a run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly.

Game two quickly became a pitchers duel, with neither team able to get a hit until the third.  It was the Texans who struck first, scoring in the third to take a 1-0 lead.  The Falcons responded in the fourth, when Marissa Salinas got things started with their first hit, a single through the left side.  Aracely Araiza followed with a double to left putting runners on second and third with just one out.  Ashlynn Bradley got a run in on a ground ball to tie the game before the Falcons ended the inning.  In the sixth, the Texans struck again with two outs, scoring four times with two out to take a 6-1 lead.  The Falcons fought back, scoring a run in the seventh on an April Arellano single but it was too much to overcome.

Abrie Castillo started the second game, tossing 6.1 innings and struck out a pair.  The Falcons scattered 11 hits between the two games with Bishop and Jessica Gonzales the only two with muliple hits.

The Falcons are back in action at home Sunday at 1 as they begin a doubleheader with Midwestern State.
