Game Recap: Softball |

Gonzales Reaches 100 Career Hits Plateau in Tucson

Senior Jessica Gonzales recorded her 100th career hit Saturday, becoming the sixth player in UT Permian Basin Softball history to reach the milestone.  The senior had an impressive day at the plate in the first game of the doubleheader, going 2-for-4 with three RBI and a pair of runs scored.  It wasn't enough as the Falcons fell in the opener to Lindenwood 11-9 and fell in the nightcap to Simon Fraser 2-1.

Trailing 3-0, the Falcon (7-7) offense got going in the third against Lindenwood.  A single and fielder's choice put a pair on for Gonzales who got the Falcons on the board with a double.  Lani Graft followed by clearing the bases with a home run and gave the Falcons a 4-3 lead.  After the Lions retook the lead, the Falcons struck again with a rally in the fifth.  Once again Alicia Marion got things going with a lead-off single and came around to score on a single by Gonzales.  After Graft singled, Marissa Salinas homered putting the Falcons up 8-6.  The lead couldn't last as the Lions scored five times in the sixth.  Choco Munoz drove in the final run with a sac fly in the seventh but it wasn't enough.

The second game of the day quickly became a pitcher's duel.  Runs in the first and second put Simon Fraser up 2-0 early before both pitchers settled into a grove.  The Falcons struggled to get going all day until their half of the seventh.  Graft once again got things going with a two-out double.  Aracely Araiza followed with a double of her own to get the Falcons within one, and put the tying run in scoring position.  That was as close as the Falcons would get as a strike out ended their seventh inning rally.

Graft had a big day at the plate with a pair of doubles and a home run between the two contests.  Salinas home run was her second of the season.  As a team the Falcons have hit seven home runs, tying last year's team in that mark.

The Falcons are back in action tomorrow against Hawaii at Hilo starting at 11 am.
