UT Permian Basin baseball got extended use out of their bullpen Sunday, having to throw all nine innings in the series finale with St. Edward's. Despite a strong effort to keep the Falcons in the game and a seventh inning, the Falcons fell to the Hilltoppers 10-4.
It was all Hilltoppers (3-7) early as they jumped on the Falcons (3-7) for five runs in the first.
Tanner Rhodes settled things down escaping trouble in the first, and allowed just two himself heading into the fourth. After struggling to get going through six innings, the Falcons broke out the sticks in the bottom of the seventh. Jay Desoto started things off with a single and advanced on a
Joey Winkler single through the right side. A walk to
Andrew Williams loaded the bases.
Hayden Matthewson worked a walk to bring in Desoto and put the Falcons on the board.
Torren Brozovich then singled to center field scoring Winkler. The Falcons got two more on a double by
Devin Ferrari and looked to add more, but
Michael Clapperton's bullet line drive was snagged at third base for a double play to end the rally. The Hilltoppers added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth to keep the game out of reach.
The Falcon bullpen struck out seven over nine innings, with Rhodes being the long man and tossing three innings.
Braeden Gould struck out three over two innings of work and
JD Martinez struck out a pair in a clean ninth.
Next up for the Falcons will be a road trip to take on UA Fort Smith beginning next Friday.
