It took 45 minutes but it was enough as UT Permian Basin climbed out of a 17-point second half deficit to shock UT Tyler in overtime, 96-89.
Donoven Carlisle was brilliant, scoring a career-high 27 points including 10 in overtime.
The Falcons (13-8. 6-6) trailed by 17 points with 14:39 to go. The comeback got sparked by a pair of
Adam Rivera threes sandwiched around a
Miles Washington layup to cut their deficit to 10.
Malik Anderson answered with a three and in less than three minutes the Falcons trailed just 57-50. The Patriots (6-11, 3-9) pushed their lead back to 13, but the Falcons caught fire from deep. An Anderson three followed by two more from Dembley made it a four-point game. Dembley scored 13-straight for the Falcons but still trailed by two with just over a minute remaining. Carlise put back an easy layup off a rebound tying things at 75. The Patriots scored before Dembley was fouled, sinking the pair with 12 seconds left. The Patriots had a golden opportunity to win in regulation, but missed a pair of free throws with five seconds left before Dembley missed a three at the buzzer. Dembley finished regulation scoring 17 of the Falcons final 22 points and climbed out of a 13-point hole.
Carlisle took over in overtime along with
Elvin Rodriguez. The got hot early with Rodriguez hitting a three to open the extra period for the team and Carlisle followed with a pair of his own threes. The paid would add a layup each and each hit a pair of free throws, combining for 17 of the Falcons 19 overtime points. Dembley finished off the night with a pair of free throws to finish off the victory.
Carlisle scored his 27 on 10-of-15 shooting and was 4-of-5 from three. Dembley finished the night with 24 points along with six assists and seven rebounds. Anderson added 19 points and was 5-of-7 from deep. Rodriguez led the bench in scoring with 13.
The Falcons are back in action Saturday as they take on Texas A&M - Commerce with tip-off scheduled around 4:30.
