Late Run Carries Falcons to Upset Over #16 DBU

1/18/2020 4:38:00 PM

Box Score UT Permian Basin pulled off their biggest win of the season, upsetting No. 16 Dallas Baptist 83-78.  The win is the first win over a ranked opponent since 2018.

The Falcons (12-8, 5-6) started things off scoring the first four points of the afternoon.  The nationally-ranked Patriots (14-3, 8-3) answered back with a 9-0 run to take the lead.  The teams went back and forth, trading leads and baskets before the Falcons found an opening.  Pat Dembley and Isaac Hernandez knocked down back to back threes to open a seven-point lead.  The Patriots closed the half on a 5-0 run and sent the game into the half with the Falcons ahead 41-39.

A Donven Carlisle dunk and another Dembley three pushed the Falcons lead to seven once again but were immediately answered.  The Patriots tied things at 46 each with a 7-0 run.  After trading points, the Patriots pulled ahead, knocking down a pair of threes to go up seven themselves.  Malik Anderson hit back to back threes and another from Carlisle got the Falcons immediately back in the game.  From there the teams traded baskets and the lead, with the lead changing hands five times.  The Falcons held a slim lead but hit their free throws down the stretch to preserve the lead and the upset victory.

"Super proud of our team and their effort," said Head Coach Josh Newman.  "We've really been struggling as of late and we challenged them to stay the course and execute the game plan for 40 minutes.  We put together a complete game today from start to finish."

Dembley was once again the leading scorer with 23 points along with five assists.  Anderson was sensational in his first start with 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds.  Carlisle finished with 15 points and five rebounds while Miles Washington added 14 points and five rebounds.  Adam Rivera had eight points and six rebounds off the bench.  The win was the first win over a ranked team in the Josh Newman era.

The Falcons return home next week to take on UT Tyler on Thursday.
