Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Calhoun Scores as Falcons Fight in Season Opener

It was a hard-fought game with plenty of chances on either side, but UT Permian Basin women's soccer fell to Colorado Mesa 4-1 on Thursday to open the season.

After a back and forth start to the affair, the Mavericks (1-0) struck first to go up 1-0.  After battling back and forth the Falcons (0-1) caught a break.  Pressure in their offensive zone forced an errant pass by the Mavericks.  Deonna Calhoun stole the pass and finished in the back of the net to tie the game at one.

The Mavericks would head into halftime up 2-1 after taking the lead with just over a minute remaining before the half after rebounding a shot that hit off the post.

The Falcons had their chances in the second half.  Lauren Marenco had back to back chances early less than a minute apart as the Falcons continued to attack the net.  The Falcons continued to fire on net with five second half shots, but couldn't breakthrough.  The Mavericks added a pair of second half goals to extend their lead for the 4-1 final.

"Not the result we wanted but the takeaways were huge," said Head Coach Linsey Garcia. "Getting the goal to tie the game at one was the response we were looking for.  There's a few defensive kinks we need to iron out and finish the chances we had early in the second half.  We're very excited about this group."

Calhoun led the way for the Falcons with the goal and added another shot on goal.  Marlise Bond made five saves in net in her first start as a freshman.

The Falcons are back in action Sunday afternoon as they head to Laredo to take on Texas A&M International at noon.
