Quincy Strambler led a well-rounded UT Permian Basin attack Friday night as UTPB Volleyball earned its first Lone Star Conference victory of the season with a 25-21, 25-16, 25-19 win against Western New Mexico in Silver City, N.M.
"Tonight showed us some things we need to work on in the future to be successful," said Head Coach Tim Loesch. "But we improved in several areas and continue to finish strong. I was also very proud of our bench for bringing energy and cheering us on in a hostile environment."
The Falcons strong depth played out on Friday as all six players with a kill in the match tallied at least four winners.
Strambler led UTPB with seven kills, hitting .357 on the night. Stephanie Sanchez added seven winners, Skyler Friel and Isela Murillo each had six winners, Travana Matthews had five kills on eight attempts with no errors to lead the Falcons with a .625 hitting percentage, and Mayce Barker added four kills.
Megan Ashton had the team lead with 11 digs on the night, and Murillo added nine for UTPB, also playing strong on serve reception in the match.
Kiera Granado led the Falcons with 17 assists, backed up by Analise Lucio who added 13 assists.
"Today was a really solid team effort," noted Loesch. "Analise and Kiera set well tonight and our kill distribution was nearly even across our six hitters. Our hitters also did a better job blocking for us while Megan, Isela and Erica did a good job defending behind and covering our hitters. Stephanie and Skyler went on some big serving runs that really helped us tonight."
The Falcons improve to 9-1, 1-0 on the season and have lost just two sets in their nine victories in 2019.
UTPB returns next in one week, beginning two matches in two nights with a bout against Angelo State in San Angelo, Texas.
