UT Permian Basin takes its perfect start to the season on the road for the first time in 2019 when the Falcons travel to Lubbock for the Chap Classic hosted by Lubbock Christian.
Playing four matches in three days, the Falcons hit the court Thursday night in the opening match of the weekend against Dixie State at 5 p.m.
UTPB plays twice Friday, starting the morning against Black Hills State at 9 a.m. and returning at 3 p.m. against Southwestern Oklahoma.
They close out the event Saturday at 1 p.m. against Pittsburg State.
The hard-hitting Falcons enter the weekend the top-hitting team in the Lone Star Conference. Leading 17 teams with a .302 hitting percentage on the season, UTPB ranks eighth in the NCAA in team hitting percentage. Senior Travana Matthews ranks second individually in the nation, leading the LSC with a .569 hitting percentage with 32 kills and just three errors on 51 total attacks.
Dixie State enters Thursday night's contest with a 1-3 record this season. The Trailblazers dropped their first two matches as hosts of the 2019 Dixie State Classic to St. Cloud State and Simon Fraser before recording a 3-1 victory against Stanislaus State. Dixie State closed the tournament with a 3-0 loss to Northwest Nazarene.
Black Hills State split four matches in Missouri this past weekend. The Yellow Jackets opened the Southern Invitational with a 3-1 win against Southwestern Oklahoma State. After a pair of 0-3 losses against Missouri Southern State and Wayne State, they closed out the event with a 3-1 win against Cameron.
Southwestern Oklahoma State dropped their first two matches against Black Hills State and Wayne State before rebounding for a 3-0 win over Colorado State Pueblo and a 3-2 win over Missouri Southern State. The Bulldogs added a mid-week victory in defeating University of the Southwest at home 3-1 this past Tuesday.
Pittsburg State enters play this weekend with a perfect 4-0 record. Hosting the Gorilla Classic, the Gorillas swept East Central and Midwestern State 3-0, and defeated Western Colorado State and Southwest Baptist 3-1.
