Early in training camp, a number of the biggest plays on the field have been made by the team's talented group of wide receivers. First year wide receivers coach Rob Messinger is ready to see how far his players can go on the field this fall.
"The sky is the limit," Messinger said. "We're only through day four but they bring energy every day and are consistent."
UTPB returns two of its top three receivers from last season. Kyle McBride was named Honorable Mention Lone Star Conference after leading the Falcons with 47 catches and 635 yards. Ben Galaviz tied for the team lead with five touchdowns on 35 catches and 422 yards. McBride is excited for the potential of this group once the season starts in three weeks.
"We're improving. We're not there yet but improving every day," said McBride. "We're taking what we've learned in film and applying on the field to win games."
The Falcons are likely to have a lot of their production in the passing game coming from their younger receivers. Of the team's 14 wide outs, eight are freshmen and four are sophomores. Messinger has seen daily improvement and knows that continued hard work each day is going to bring their talents to the forefront.
"A lot of it is consistency, but even more is the mental aspect," said Messinger. "Knowing what the plays are, fighting through the tough times when they're tired and sore, and continuing to fight through that to get over the hump and make the most of it. We have a lot of young talent ready to come through this season."
