Andrew Donovan had a big day recording four hits as UT Permian Basin earned a split to open their final weekend of the regular season at Tarleton. In the first game Donovan recorded the Falcons first hit with a double in the sixth, then broke out in game two with three hits and four RBI for the win. With the win the Falcons assured themselves of finishing no lower than fifth in the Lone Star Conference.
Rain pushed back the opening game of the series which quickly became a pitcher's duel. Neither pitcher gave an inch before the Texans (15-33) crossed the plate on a wild pitch in the third inning for the game's first run. They'd get another on a sacrifice fly in the fifth putting the Falcons (18-28) behind 2-0. Despite being no-hit into the sixth, Donovan opened the frame with a double down the left field line for their first hit of the ballgame. Two batters later,
Tylor Frailey hit a deep fly ball to right center and the center fielder fumbled the transfer on the throw in, allowing Donovan to score from second.
In the seventh,
William Bierlein opened the inning with a single before being moved over on a sacrifice bunt. Pinch-runner
CJ Flores moved to third on a ground ball putting their Falcons down to their final out.
Jonathan Bermudez lined a two-out single into center field to tie the ballgame at two. The tie did not last long as the Texans opened the bottom of the seventh with a home run for the walk-off 3-2 final.
In the second game the Falcon offense got to work immediately.
Pemron Burrows opened the game with a lead-off single and was followed by a walk and hit batter to load the bases. The Falcons would get a run on a ground out by
Peyton Koopman for the early 1-0 lead. The game would remain that way heading into the bottom of the fifth inning. A pair of errors allowed the Texans to tie the game heading into the sixth.
Tony Oslovar singled to start the inning and moved to second on a bunt. Frailey came through with a single to center field, retaking the lead. Frailey stole second and came around to score on an RBI-single by
Skyler Palermo pushing the lead to 3-1. The Texans scored in the bottom half of the inning on a passed ball putting the lead down to just one.
The Falcon offense would not be deterred putting the game away in the seventh. Koopman drew a lead-off walk.
Andres Romero walked and Oslovar singled to load the bases with one out. Donovan doubled into the left field corner to score a pair and go up 5-2. The Falcons continued to add on runs in the eighth with Romero getting an RBI on a fielder's choice and Oslovar followed with an RBI-single. Donovan capped off the night with a two-run single to right to go up 9-2 which would be the final.
Donovan led the Falcons on the day going 4-for-5 with two doubles and four RBI. Oslovar had a big second game going 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Tyler Vlasek, Bierlein and Burrows had two hits a piece in the second game, Bierlein had one of the Falcons three hits in the opening game.
Alex Rivera was terrific starting the first game allowing just two runs over six innings, striking out seven. In the second game
Jake Rohde picked up his third win of the season allowing one unearned run over five innings.
Nick Bartley was just as good allowing one unearned run over the final four innings and just one hit for his first save of the season.
These teams wrap-up the regular season tomorrow with a double header beginning at 1 p.m. The Falcons enter the final day of the regular season in fifth place, needing at least two wins and some help to move up in the standings.
