Palermo and Romero Lead Offense in Rout of A&M Kingsville

The UT Permian Basin offense broke out in a huge way in the second game of a double header scoring 14 runs on 14 hits defeating Texas A&M - Kingsville 14-8.  Skyler Palermo went 4-4 while Andres Romero went 3-4 with four RBI to lead the offense in the ballgame.  This came after the Falcons (13-22, 4-7) dropped the first game 11-0.

The Falcons fell behind the Javelinas (25-14, 9-6) early as the visitors struck for six runs in the first inning.  On offense the Falcons couldn't get going against starter Zach Boyett as they only managed to get three runners into scoring position.  Daniel Juarez was good out of the bullpen tossing 4.1 innings while Quinton Rockwell struck out three in 2.1.  Palermo and Romero did most of the damage offensively with each picking up a pair of singles.

The offense woke up in the first inning of the second game after starter Jake Rohde tosses a 1-2-3 inning.  Pemron Burrows started things off with a single and stole second.  Palermo moved him to third on a bloop single.  With two outs, Romero singled to left to bring in Burrows for the 1-0 lead.  Tyler Vlasek doubled into the left center field gap for two more giving the Falcons a 3-0 lead after one inning.  In the third the Javelinas would get on the board cutting the lead to 3-1 but the Falcons answered right back.

Burrows once again got things started when he was hit by a pitch.  Tylor Frailey then beat out a bunt single to put two on.  Palermo singled to left driving in Burrows to make it 4-1.  After a wild pitch advanced the runners, Romero came through again with a two-run single.  Jonathan Bermudez followed with a single to score Romero giving the Falcons a 7-1 lead.  The Javelinas would not go away chipping away at the Falcon lead with two in the fourth and fifth innings making it 7-5.

In the fifth the Falcons would put things away with a seven-run outburst to put the game out of reach.  Palermo doubled off the wall in left to start inning and came around to score on a single by William Bierlein.  He would move to third on a wild pitch and be driven in on another single by Romero making it 9-5.  Vlasek made it to third after his sac bunt attempt was thrown into right field scoring another run and putting another runner in scoring position.  Bermudez walked and a wild pitch advanced the runners scoring another run.  Andrew Donovan singled bringing in Bermudez pushing the lead to 12-5.  Frailey knocked in a run on a sac fly and Palermo came through again with an RBI-single for the 14-5 lead.  The Javelinas would score three in the sixth but it wasn't enough as the Falcons finished the job 14-8.

"Incredibly tough game in game two.  Didn't matter the lead we knew Kingsville would come back right away," said Head Coach Brian Reinke.  "They are so explosive on offense.  We pitched it well early but late we had some trouble that they capitalized on.  Really glad to see us bounce back each time and score some runs."

Palermo finished the day 6-7, scoring twice and driving in a pair.  Romero went 5-7 with four RBI and scored three times.  Burrows had two hits and scored three times while stealing two bases.  Eight of the nine starters had a hit and scored a run while seven of the nine added an RBI.  Jake Rohde got the start and earned his third win of the season.

The series will resume tomorrow at noon before the Falcons head on the road for Easter weekend.
