Choco Munoz came up big in a big situation Saturday afternoon, helping to lead UT Permian Basin softball to a big 3-1 victory over #9 West Texas A&M at the UTPB Softball Field.
Munoz broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning, hitting her first home run of the season with
April Arellano on base deep to center field to give the Falcons a 3-1 lead over the Lady Buffs.
Cindy Juarez gave up a base hit to lead off the seventh, but shut the Lady Buffs down after, getting a pop up to shortstop, a foul out behind the plate, and a fly ball in foul territory to end the game and secure the win.
Juarez was a master of getting out of trouble on the day as West Texas A&M had 10 hits on the afternoon with a pair of walks, but scored just one run in the first inning.Â
The Falcons earlier tied the game in the bottom of the fourth when
Alyssa Lopez hit a flare into right field with the bases loaded to score
Vanessa Alonzo from third base.Â
West Texas A&M took the early lead in game two, scoring three unearned runs in the top of the first before adding a fourth run in the top of the second.
The Falcons clawed back in the bottom half of the second, scoring their first on Munoz's second home run of the day to left center.
Abby Hernandez added a second run on a single into right field with the bases loaded that scored Alonzo to pull within 4-2.
Alonzo later drove home the last UTPB run on a base hit back up the middle that scored
Alicia Marion in the bottom of the fifth.
UTPB is back in action next weekend, traveling to Silver City, N.M., for a three game series at Western New Mexico.
