Box Score 2 UT Permian Basin softball combined for 18 runs in a pair of games Friday afternoon as the Falcons split a pair of 11-7 decisions on the road against Western New Mexico in Lone Star Conference action in Silver City, N.M.
Vanessa Alonzo drove in five runs on the day while
Alyssa Lopez added a pair of runs, three RBI and a pair of stolen bases with a team-best five hits. The Falcons were perfect on the basepath on the afternoon, successfully stealing seven bases on the afternoon.
Alonzo got the day started for UTPB, driving in two to open game one for an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first.
The Mustangs came back with three runs in the bottom half of the inning, and scored a run in each of the second and third innings for a 5-2 lead.
The Falcons got one back in the fourth when Lopez stole second and
Jessica Gonzales scored on a throwing error on the play.
Abby Hernandez later drove in Lopez to pull within 5-4.
Kayla Martin tied the game at 5-5 in the top of the fifth with a sacrifice fly.
Western New Mexico took the ,lead for the last time in the game when Makayla Guerra hit her second solo shot home run in the bottom half of the inning.
Trailing 11-5, UTPB added two more in the seventh on a ground out RBI by Alonzo and a single from Martin.
Alicia Marion had three hits and three runs scored for the Falcons, while Alonzo drove in three on a pair of hits in the opener.
Trailing 1-0 in game two, Gonzales got the Falcons on the scoreboard with an RBI single to short that drove home Martin to even the game at 1-1. Lopez hit a tripe to left to plate Gonzales, and she later came home on a
Choco Munoz single to the outfield for the 3-1 advantage.
The Mustangs used a grand slam in the fourth to go back on top 5-3 in the bottom of the fourth, but the Falcons roared back their next chance. Alonzo drove in a pair with a run-scoring double, clearing the bases to score Martin and
April Arellano. Lopez gave the Falcons the lead on a double to left, and Munoz put UTPB ahead 7-5 with a double.
After Western New Mexico tied the game with a pair of runs in its half of the fifth, the Falcon offense immediately responded in the sixth. Martin drove in her first of the game on a ball back to the pitcher to take back the lead 8-7.
Ruby Sanchez singled to left to score two, and Lopez drove in the final run of the game on a sac fly to right to go ahead 11-7.
Sloan Springfield got the win for the Falcons, her third of the season. She threw the last four frames, allowing two runs off of four hits with no walks and no strikeouts.
Arellano, Martin and Lopez each had three hits in the game for UTPB; Martin leading the team with three runs and Lopez driving in three.
Both teams are back in action Saturday, closing the series with the rubber match at 1 p.m.
