Falcons Go Toe to Toe with A&M - Commerce in Thrilling LSC Quarterfinal

Just a week after knocking off regionally ranked Texas A&M - Commerce, UT Permian Basin squared off with them once again this time in the Lone Star Conference Quarterfinals.  The home team won the first two meetings but this time the higher seeded Lions would defeat the Falcons 90-80 in a game featuring 15 lead changes and was tied 13 times for a total of 6:38.

The Falcons would start red hot with a 9-0 on 4-4 shooting in the opening three minutes, forcing a Lion timeout.  Another basket pushed it to 11-0 and the Falcons wouldn't miss until the 16:20 mark in the first half.  The Lions would answer back with an eight-point swing of their own before a pair of Demarco Jackson free throws ended the run.  Jacob Ledoux was money early with seven points by the second media timeout.

A four-minute scoring drought allowed the Lions to grab a 28-23 lead before a Falcon timeout with 4:42 remaining in the half.  Adam Rivera would drill a three out of the timeout and on the ensuing possession backed down a defender to tie it up at 28.  After a Lion shot bounced out after being halfway down the cylinder, Miles Washington answered with a slam at the other end to retake the lead.  The teams would head into the half tied at 33 after Jackson's half court shot hit just off the front of the rim at the buzzer.  Washington led the way in the first half with 11 points while the Falcon defense held the Lions to 3-18 from three-point range.

Xavier Ledet would find an open look under the basket to open the half and retake the lead.  The teams would trade blows but Ledet would exit with three fouls with 16:05 to play.  The Lions would take a one-point lead into the first media timeout, but Maurice Walton would score back to back baskets putting the Falcons back in front.  Tied at 48, Isaac Hernandez saved a fast break dunk stripping the ball as the Lion went up with it.  After the out-of-bounds, the Lions would hit a three which Rivera would answer with one of his own.

Moments later Isaiah Hammons got his hands on a tipped ball, dribbled through three defenders and converted the lay-up on the other end.  A Ledet slam pushed the Falcon lead to 60-55 but the Lions back to back threes put the Falcons down once again.  The Falcons would use some pretty passing to bounce back and retake the lead again.  Ledoux threaded the needle on a bounce pass to Rivera for the easy lay-up and on the next possession Walton threw it over the top to Rivera for another lay-up.

The Lions would take control from there slowly pulling away eventually grabbing a 14-point lead.  A couple of late threes by Ledoux and some sloppy turnovers by the Lions let the game get back to an eight-point game, but that was as close as the Falcons would get in the 90-80 final.

Ledoux finished as the high scorer with 21 points on 8-15 shooting and 4-5 from three-point range.  Washington finished with 16 points on 6-9 shooting.  Walton had all nine of his points in the second half before exiting with foul trouble.  In his final collegiate game Ledet finished with nine points and seven rebounds before fouling out.
