UT Permian Basin softball scored first Saturday and got out of some tight defensive situations, but the Pioneers scored a pair of runs in each the fifth and sixth innings to take a 5-1 win over the Falcons in Denton, Texas.

Jessica Gonzales got the Falcons on the scoreboard early, driving a ball to left center to bring home Abby Hernandez for the 1-0 lead in the top of the first.

Texas Woman's tied it in the bottom half of the inning, scoring on a Bailey Turner double for the 1-1 tie.

The Pioneers broke a long tie in the bottom of the fifth, getting RBI singles from Sydney Johnson and Tara Solomon.

Paige Tamayo added to the Pioneer lead in the sixth, hitting a two-run home run to go ahead 5-1.

Sloan Springfield kept the Falcons tied in the third inning after Texas Woman's loaded the bases with no outs. UTPB got two straight infield ground outs to get the force out at home, and escaped the inning with no damage done on a pop out to shortstop.

Hernandez reached base two of three times for the Falcons, drawing a walk and going 1-2 at the dish out of the second spot in the lineup.

UTPB returns home next weekend, hosting Tarleton State for three games beginning with a Friday night contest at 6 p.m.
