UT Permian Basin softball kicked off a three-game weekend series at Texas Woman's, and the Pioneers held the Falcons offense in check in handing UTPB a pair of 4-1 and 5-0 losses Friday night in Denton.
The Falcons got their only run of the day in their first inning at the plate, when
Ruby Sanchez walked with the bases loaded to score
Alicia Marion.
The Pioneers responded in their half at the plate, scoring twice in the bottom of the first on a base hit up the middle and a sacrifice fly to right field.Â
Texas Woman's did the rest of the scoring in the game, adding a single run in each of the third and fifth innings for the 4-1 win.
The top of the lineup collected all of the hits for the Falcons, as Marion,
Abby Hernandez and
Jessica Gonzales each had two hits apiece at the top of the batting order for UTPB in game one.
Hernandez was the lone Falcon with a base hit in game two. Texas Woman's scored a pair of runs in the first, added a third run in the bottom of the third, and scored two more in the bottom of the third.
"I don't think we played our best softball tonight. We were slow to make adjustments at the plate in game one," said head coach Tiala Tagaloa. "We did a better job of doing that in game two but we hit everything right at them. We had some great defensive plays by
Alyssa Lopez,
April Arellano,
Cindy Juarez and
Jessica Gonzales with some clutch hits by
Abby Hernandez and
Alicia Marion. Abrie struggled early in game two, but finished strong with eight strikeouts."
UT Permian Basin is back in action Saturday afternoon, taking on Texas Woman's in the third and final game of the weekend at 1 p.m. in Denton, Texas.
