UT Permian Basin is advancing to the Alpine Fresh 4-Him Classic Championship Game after an offensive explosion defeated host Colorado Christian 16-10.
Despite an early 10 a.m. start time, the Falcon (4-2) bats were awake early. Three walks loaded the bases with one out before
Tyler Vlasek drove in
Tylor Frailey for the early 1-0 lead. After scoring a run on a wild pitch and a
Skyler Palermo walk, Jonathon Bermudez came through with an RBI-single and would be followed by a two-run double off the bat of
Tony Oslovar.Â
Andrew Donovan drove in a pair with a single to expand the lead to 7-0 and chased starter Zach Haning from the game. The Cougars would start to chip away at the lead with a pair of runs in their half of the first before adding another in the second inning. Â
The Falcon offense would be quiet until waking back up in the fifth. With one out, Oslovar would walk and move to third on a single by Donovan. Frailey would drive in Oslovar on a single of his own.Â
Pemron Burrows would drive one to the opposite field gap for a two-run triple putting the lead at eight.Â
Alex Wixson followed with an RBI-single of his own and the Falcon lead was 11-3. Falcon starter
Tanner Rhodes settled after allowing three runs in three runs in the first two innings, finishing with four straight scoreless innings. The Falcons would strike again in the eighth inning on an RBI-single from Bermudez. Pinch hitter
Gabriel Melendez would add to the lead with a double down the line for two more making the lead 14-3. Â
The Cougars would attempt a comeback in their half of the eighth inning. Aided by an error they'd strike for seven runs of their own before
Krisjon Segleski would end the inning with a strike out. Now leading by just four, the Falcons would add a pair of insurance runs. Bierlein would double home Wixson, after a lead off walk, and advance to third on the throw. He would come into scorer the very next batter on a Vlasek ground ball and make it 16-10. Segleski would pitch around a one-out single to finish off the game for the 16-10 win.
Rhodes picked up his first win of the season and has allowed just two earned runs in 7.1 innings on the season. All nine Falcon starters recorded a hit, RBI and scored a run. Bermudez was the high man with three hits on the day with Vlasek and Donovan also having multi-hit games. Burrows, Vlasek, Bermudez, Oslovar, Donovan and Melendez each had two RBI. Frailey, Wixson, Bierlein, Vlasek, Bermudez and Osolvar each came around to score twice.Â
CJ Flores added a double off the bench, one of five extra base hits on the day. After Rhodes allowed three runs in six innings and struck out four,
Clay Thompson threw a clean seventh inning.
The Falcons advance to the Alpine Fresh 4-Him Classic Championship Game tomorrow at 1:30 at Railroad Stadium in Cleburne to take on the winner of Bracket 1.
