Sanchez Complete Game Shutout Highlights Doubleheader at University of the Southwest

Ruby Sanchez picked up her first win of the season Tuesday afternoon, tossing seven shutout innings in a 3-0 blanking at University of the Southwest in non-conference action. Earlier in the day, the Falcons fell victims to the Mustangs in a 1-0 defeat.

Sanchez scattered three hits in three different innings and walked two in the shutout. She struck out a pair of batters in the win.

The Falcons got on the scoreboard early in game two. Valerie Gonzalez walked to lead off the game and advanced two bases on a sacrifice bunt by April Arellano. Standing at third, she came home and beat the throw back to the plate when Kayla Martin struck out but had to be thrown out after a dropped third strike.

The 1-0 lead held until the top of the sixth when Martin led off the frame with a single to left. After advancing to second on a wild pitch, Vanessa Alonzo drove her home with a triple to the wall in right center, beating the tag at third to reach scoring position. Alonzo scored two batters later on a come-backer up the middle by Courtney Cagle for the 3-0 lead.

The middle of the Falcon lineup woke up the bats in the night cap, as Martin, Alonzo, Sanchez and Cagle each had a pair of hits to pace the offense.

The Falcon offense was limited to just three hits in the opening 1-0 loss, but both teams missed opportunities to grab the games first run. Gonzalez and Alicia Marion led off the game with a walk and single, respectively, to put runners on first and second with nobody out, but neither was able to score in the top of the first.

Southwest also left a pair in scoring position, stranding two on second and third in the bottom half of the inning.

The Mustangs scored the lone run of game one in the bottom of the fifth on a two-out double to the gap in center field.

Sloan Springfield gave up just one run in the loss. She allowed five hits in six innings, walking one and striking out four on the afternoon.

The Falcons return to Lone Star Conference play this weekend, traveling to Portales, N.M., for a three game series against Eastern New Mexico.
