April Arellano had a big day at the plate Friday for UT Permian Basin softball, but the Falcons fell in extra-innings 5-4 to start a three-game Lone Star Conference series on the road at Eastern New Mexico in Portales, N.M.
The hometown Greyhounds took the early lead, scoring three runs in the first inning. Arellano responded in the top of the second with her first hit of the night, scoring
Courtney Cagle on a double into left.
After Eastern New Mexico grabbed the run back to increase their lead to 4-1, Arellano pulled UTPB within a run in the top of the fifth, hitting her second double of the game to drive in
Kayla Martin and
Jessica Gonzales.
Gonzales come in to score the tying run an inning later, scoring on an error at shortstop to even the game at 4-4 in the top of the sixth.
Eastern New Mexico picked up the game winner in the eighth on a walkoff double to left for the 5-4 win.
Gonzales paced the UTPB offense, finishing 3-4 at the dish with a walk and a pair of runs scored. Arellano reached base three times, collecting a walk with her pair of doubles.
The Falcons and Greyhounds close out the weekend with a pair of games Saturday. First pitch in the doubleheader is scheduled for 2 p.m.
