Falcons Return to Action with Sunday Doubleheader

2/24/2019 7:44:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 UT Permian Basin baseball returned to action after nearly two weeks off, dropping a pair of games to Adams State on Sunday.

The Falcon (5-4) offense was quiet throughout the first game but was kept in the game on the backs of their pitching.  The Falcons loaded the bases in the second inning before failing to drive in a run.  Ivan Thomas had another good start striking out seven and departing after allowing a run in 4.1 innings.  The Grizzlies (2-11) would add another run in the sixth to make it a 2-0 game heading into the final inning.  Heading into their last at bats, the Falcons had been held without a hit between starter Daniel Brennan and reliever Troy Gutbub.  Down to their final out, Andrew Donovan singled to break up the no-hitter.  Tylor Frailey would follow by being hit by a pitch but that's where the rally ended for the 2-0 loss.

Things started great in the second game for the home team.  Frailey pulled the first pitch down the line for a home run and got the Falcons right on the board.  Starter Alex Rivera cruised through his first three innings of work including striking out five straight batters.  Things unraveled in the fourth though as the Grizzlies struck for six runs forcing Rivera out of the game.  They would add another run in the sixth before the Falcon offense would catch a break in the seventh.  Pemron Burrows singled and stole second before being knocked in on an RBI-single by Frailey with two outs.  Tyler Vlasek reached after what would've been the third out popped out of the glove of the left fielder to score Frailey.  The next batter William Bierlein would drive in Vlasek before Dalton Castillo would drive in Bierlein to make it a 7-5 game.  That's as close as the Falcons would get as the Grizzlies added an insurance run in the ninth for the 8-5 final.

Frailey had a pair of hits in the second game while Burrows broke out for three hits of his own.  Outside the six-run inning, the Falcons only allowed four runs on the day.  Krisjon Segleski allowed two runs over 5.1 innings of relief.

The Falcons wrap-up their series with the Grizzlies tomorrow before taking on West Texas A&M at home next weekend.
