Riding a four-game winning streak, UT Permian Basin welcomes Adams State to Odessa this weekend for a three-game series.
Â
After dropping two of three to open the season with Rogers State, the Falcons haven't lost. They took three straight at the Alpine Fresh 4-Him Classic before defeating University of the Southwest last Tuesday. Now the Falcons get a chance to add to the winning streak against Adams State who is yet to win this season.Â
Â
The Falcons have gained momentum riding some hot pitching arms.Â
Ivan Thomas was brilliant in his lone start during the win streak allowing one run over eight innings. Freshman
Paul McRae hasn't allowed a run in 4.2 innings while earning a win and two saves on the season, while fellow freshman
Jake Rohde has thrown 8.1 shutout innings with a WHIP of 0.86 so far.Â
Krisjon Segleski has an ERA of just 2.08 in 4.1 innings while recording a save.Â
Tanner Rhodes and
Cale Thornton also have ERAs under three to start the season. Â
Â
The Falcons have been balanced offensively, relying on timely hitting so far this season.Â
Peyton Koopman has been one of the team's better hitters with a .385 batting average and scoring three times.Â
Gabriel Melendez continues to hit just extra base hits, with all four of his hits this season being of the variety, including a grand slam. He leads the team with eight RBI through seven games. Despite opponents having a higher on-base percentage this season, the Falcons have outscored their opponents. The Falcons have 17 extra-base hits compared to allowing just 11 on the season. The Falcons also have dominated in stolen bases. On the season, the Falcons are 8-9 in stolen base attempts, while opponents are just 5-12 with
Jonathan Bermudez throwing out six would be base stealers.
Â
Adams State has had a rough start to the season going 0-11 through the first three weeks. The team has been swept in four-game road series the last two weekends by West Texas A&M and University of the Southwest. Their bullpen has been a major part of their struggles. The team lost in walk-offs in both series, including a six-run inning to lose to Southwest.Â
Â
Nico Nintze has been the team's best hitter by far, leading the team with 15 hits, a .429 average and nine RBI. He is second on the team with eight runs scored, three doubles and a home run. Logan Bistrup is also off to a good start hitting .351 with a pair of home runs and six RBI. Jared Gay is also hitting over the .300-mark with a .323 average.Â
Â
On the mound, Kolton Bleggi is the only Grizzly with an ERA under six. As a staff the Grizzlies have a 12.68 ERA while opponents are hitting .353 against them. Errors and walks have not helped their cause, walking more than they've struck out, 74 to 72, while committing 31 errors. Opposing teams have also been successful in 12 of 15 stolen base attempts on the season.
The teams will start their three-game series at noon on Sunday with a double header. Game three of the series is scheduled for Monday at noon as well. Next week the Falcons will take on current No. 2 West Texas A&M in Odessa in a four-game weekend series
