UT Permian Basin men's and women's swimming and diving has been practicing early mornings and long hours since the beginning of September. The culmination of all of their hours of dedication and hard work will be on display this week when the Falcons head to the New South Intercollegiate Swim Conference Championships Feb. 20-23, hosted by Delta State University in Cleveland, Miss.

"We've trained really hard this year and this meet is the culmination of all of that work," said head coach
Cameron Kainer. "This is the time of year where we fine tune things to make sure we have the most successful meet possible. If the team takes care of themselves and focuses on helping each other, then the rest will take care of itself. "
UTPB is coming off of a successful end to their regular dual season, having picked up a combined victory over Southwestern on Jan. 26. UTPB picked 14 wins between the men's and women's teams at COM Aquatics in Midland.
"The meet against Southwestern gave us an idea of where we needed to complete our training and gave us confidence to swim under any condition. Our upperclassmen and assistant coaches have done a great job of helping the first year athletes know what the atmosphere will be like at conference. Competing against great competition like Southwestern, whose men just won their conference championship, sets us up to know what we could see this week."
So far in 2018-19, UT Permian Basin swimming and diving has set over 25 new top-10 times with a new school record in the women's 200 Freestyle Relay. The Falcons will have lofty expectations over the next four days after they ended 2018 with 13 school records and 59 all time top-10 times at the 2018 NSISC Championships.
"The student-athletes have gone through fine tuned training and more rest throughout training, to have the energy to attack several events over the four day meet," said Kainer. We've had several meets this year where we have had little rest and expected strong results. If we can do it when we are tired and training against ourselves, then we should be able to compete when we're rested and focused. It's a long trip and lots of variables, but we stick with what has been successful this year which is consistency and focus."
