Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Rivera, Washington Lead High-Flying Win over Cameron

Adam Rivera tied his season-high with 21 points and Miles Washington continued a hot streak with 19 points as UT Permian Basin men's basketball returned home for the first time in over three weeks to pick up a commanding 95-75 win over Cameron Thursday night at the UTPB Gym.

Thursday night was also special for Head Coach Josh Newman, who won his 250th career game as a head coach.

"The Falcon Dome never felt so good," said Newman. "It's hard to believe we played five straight road games and were on the road for three weeks. It was great being home in front of our fans and they didn't disappoint. This was a big win in regards of standings and the possibility of extending our season with the conference tournament."

Thursday's game came in reverse fashion of its earlier win this season at Cameron. The Falcons defeated the Aggies 93-89, but needed to out-score them by 13 points in the second half after trailing 55-46 at halftime. The second meeting played out a little easier at the start as the Falcons scored six straight points on three consecutive possessions to go ahead 21-11 on a basket by Washington.

UTPB led by as many as 11 points six different times, and held a 47-38 lead at halftime on four-straight points to end the first by UTPB.

Rivera scored 14 of his game-high 21 points in the first half while Jacob Ledoux hit a pair of 3-pointers to score 12 points with five assists in the opening 20 minutes.

Isaiah Hammons turned his game around in the second half. After playing 13 scoreless minutes in the first half, he rebounded to lead UTPB with 15 points after halftime, hitting 4-6 from the field and all six of his free throw attempts. Xavier Ledet had a perfect second half, hitting all three of his field goals and going 4-4 from the line for a 10 point final 20 minutes.

UTPB shot over 60 percent from the floor as a team as four of five starters hit over 50 percent of its attempts. Rivera scored his 21 points on 8-11 shooting with four rebounds and three assists, while Washington was 9-12 for 19 points. Hammons hit 4-7 of his shots while scoring 15 and Ledet was 4-5 overall on the night for 14 points with six rebounds.

The win puts separation between UTPB and the bottom of the Lone Star Conference. The Falcons remain in seventh place, but are now a game and a half ahead of Cameron, who sits in the eighth and final qualifying position for the LSC Championships.

UTPB closes out a home weekend Saturday, hosting Midwestern State at 4 p.m.
