Carson Newsome got a second chance at picking up a win over Midwestern State, and he made it count, hitting a layup with under two seconds remaining to help cap a 12-0 Falcon run as UTPB Men's Basketball knocked off the Mustangs 80-79 Thursday night in Odessa.
Newsome scored the final eight points in the night for the Falcons, first hitting a 3-pointer with 1:44 remaining to close the gap to a four-point game at 79-75. Newsome hit a pair at the line to make it a one-possession game with 43 seconds remaining, and closed it to a one-point game by sinking the first of a pair at the stripe.
After missing the second and a chance to tie the game, he forced a turnover on the other end with a steal as 15 seconds remained in the half. It was determined he was intentionally fouled and he would go to the line for two shots and the Falcons would receive possession following the free throws.
With a chance for the Falcons to take the lead for the first time in the second half, both shots rattled out to leave UTPB trailing by one.
Pat Dembley took possession in the UTPB backcourt and pushed up to Newsome on the right side, where he drove to the basket and hit a fadeaway shot off the glass with time running out for the one-point lead.
Newsome missed his ensuing free throw, and a Mustang rebound with 1.3 seconds remaining gave the visitors hope. Those chances were dashed when a full-court pass attempt was tipped away and intercepted as time expired.
"Carson had an opportunity to win the game and wasn't able to capitalize, but he made up for it with a huge basket," said Head Coach
Josh Newman. But to get to that point,
Pat Dembley came up with a huge offensive rebound. I thought
Miles Washington was absolutetly fantastic on both ends of the floor and really gave us a chance to win. He scored against the zone and had several huge blocks and altered countless passes."
UTPB trailed by as many as 14 points in the half, including as late as with 6:12 remaining in the game.
Miles Washington led a group of six Falcons in double figures with 17 points, hitting 7-9 from the field. Newsome added 14 points and a season-high nine assists.
Adam Rivera and
Donoven Carlisle each scored 13 points, Rivera hitting three 3-pointers and Carlisle scooping up a team-best six rebounds.
Pat Dembley added 11 points and five assists, and
Elvin Rodriguez came off the bench to contribute 10 points.
D'Monta Harris led all players in the game with 18 points and seven rebounds for Midwestern State. The Mustangs ended the night shooting 60 percent overall as a team, including 56 percent on 13-23 shooting from 3-point range. MSU was plagued all night by turnovers, committing 25 to just 10 by the Falcons, and UTPBÂ out-scored the Mustangs 29-15 on points off of turnovers.
"Tonight showed a lot of grit," said Newman. "Being down late and not playing well, we could have easily packed it in and gave up. But they didn't, and we are extremely proud of their effort and resolve late in the game! I thought our crowd was fantastic and really helped us all the way until the final 1.5 seconds."
UTPB is back in action this Saturday, taking on Sul Ross in the second annual Toy Toss Game. Fans will throw their toys onto the court after the Falcons score their first points of the game, and all toys will be donated to local charities in time for the holiday season.
