Murillo Features on Offense, Defense for UTPB in LSC Volleyball Quarterfinals against Angelo State

Junior Isela Murillo led the Falcons on offense and defense Thursday night as #7 UT Permian Basin played in its second Lone Star Conference Tournament game of the week, but #2 Angelo State had too much for UTPB in a 22-25, 17-25, 13-25 loss in Commerce, Texas.

The Falcons played the Rambelles tough in the first set despite a slow start. Angelo State won the first three points of the match, but the Falcons clawed back behind a big pair of blocks involving Travana Matthews. UTPB rallied to tie the set at 13-13 behind a pair of kills from Isela Murillo and Matthews. UTPB took its first lead on an attack error by ASU to lead 15-14, but a three-point rally from ASU gave it the lead back. Another Falcon rally on a kill by Matthews and a service ace from Lanai Hurd tied the match late at 22-22, but Angelo State took the first set after three consecutive kills for a 25-22 opening set win.

Angelo State pulled away to open the second set, grabbing a 12-6 lead, but the Falcons scored three of four to close within four at 12-8 after kills by Skyler Friel and Erika Lozano. UTPB got as close as four points two more times in the set, but Angelo State pulled away late in the set for an eight point, 25-17 second set win.

The Rambelles started hot in the third, winning eight of the nine first points to lead 8-1, and the Falcons were never able to rebound in dropping the third set 25-13.

Murillo finished the match tying for the team-lead with eight kills, and added 12 digs on the afternoon. Matthews also had eight kills for the Falcons to go with four blocks.

Megan Ashton had a team-best 13 digs on the day, while Analise Lucio had 22 assists for UTPB.
