Kiara Pennycooke's blast with eight minutes left in regulation lifted UT Permian Basin to a 2-1 comeback victory over St. Mary's. It was the Falcons first win over the Rattlers since 2011.
Things started early for the Rattlers (4-8, 2-5) who scored just over five minutes into the game for the 1-0 lead. The Falcons (1-9-1, 1-6-1) never blinked getting back to work and putting pressure on the opposing defense. The Falcons found the equalizer in the 23
rd minute when
Kessie Stocker put a loose ball home and it would remain that way until the half.
Both teams had chances early and often in the second half, but neither team could connect. In the 82
nd minute, a foul gave the Falcons a free kick in the offensive zone. Instead of firing on net,
Ellie Putnam passed it wide to Pennycooke who from the outskirts of the right side of the box, blasted it into the top left corner of the net and the game-winner.
"The teams been bonding and growing our team chemistry and it's showing on the pitch," said Head Coach
Lindsey Garcia. "Marlise (Bond) did very well in goal playing back to her feet to keep possession. Our midfield did a great job maintaining possession and find the key passes to goal. Our top three made great runs to open up and breakdown their back line. Very happy with the group effort and we'll keep the momentum moving forward."
Bond was once again fantastic in net making eight saves. She now has 25 saves and just three goals allowed over her last three games. Stocker's goal was her second of the season and Pennycooke's was her first. Putnam and
Deonna Calhoun were credited with assists.
The Falcons hit the road next week where they'll play Oklahoma Christian on Thursday and Midwestern State on Saturday. Both games will have conference playoff implications as the Falcons sit just two points out of the eighth seed.
