UT Permian Basin Volleyball welcomed back a trio of players that led the Falcons to a thrilling 18-25, 25-18, 25-20, 18-25, 15-13 win over Texas Woman's in Lone Star Conference action Saturday afternoon in Denton.
Quincy Strambler and
Travana Matthews both returned after missing Friday's match, and
Haleigh Robinson came back after a lengthy absence to help lead the Falcon attack.
After struggling in the first set, UTPBÂ came out midway through the second set to take a 15-12 lead off of a 6-2 run capped by kills from Robinson and Sanchez, and a block by Matthews and Strambler. After a blocked shot, UTPB scored the next three points, taking an 18-13 lead on an ace by
Lanai Hurd. The Falcons closed the second out with winners by Hurd and
Skyler Friel, and a winner on match point by Strambler.
After taking the third and dropping the fourth, the Falcons needed to rally after trailing early in the fifth 5-2. UTPB scored four straight points, all on kills by Robinson, to turn a two-point deficit into an 11-10 lead. The Pioneers came back to take a 13-12 advantage, but UTPBÂ played strong to rally and score the final three points of the match. Strambler tied the match at 13-13 with a kill and Hurd hit another ace for a 14-13 lead and match point. Matthews and Robinson combined on a block to wrap up the five-set win.
Strambler had a season-high and match-best 16 kills on the day, hitting .324 on the afternoon. Robinson had 12 kills, hitting .385 with just two errors on 26 attempts. Matthews and
Isela Murillo each added 10 kills for UTPB.
Analise Lucio continued a strong stretch that has seen the Falcons win their last four matches, setting the Falcons up with 44 assists and adding 14 digs.
Megan Ashton had a match-best 27 digs.
The Falcons are back home this next weekend, taking on Lubbock Christian and Angelo State in a pair of divisional matches.
