UT Permian Basin put together their best 90 minutes of the season and took Angelo State down to the wire before they fell 2-1 on a late goal by the Rambelles.
Marlise Bond made four stops in goal to start the afternoon within the first 10 minutes of action to keep the game scoreless. The Falcon (0-9, 0-6) offense tried to get going but three offsides slowed their momentum. The game remained scoreless until the 30
th minute when the Rambelles found the back of the net. The Falcons had a chance before the half but
Deonna Calhoun was stopped in the bottom left corner, sending the game to the half with the Falcons trailing 1-0.
The Falcons equalized early in the second half when
Kalia Beckwith found the back of the net in the 51
st minute to tie the game at one. The Belles continued to get chances but Bond was up to the task keeping the match tied. The Falcon defense held until the Belles scored in the 80
th minute to put the Falcons down 2-1, which would end up the final.
"The team showed a lot of resiliency to go down and fight back," said Head Coach
Lindsey Garcia. "Kiarra Pennycooke did very well defending the leading scorer in the conference, as well as the back line. Our seniors Ariel (Roybal), Kessie (Stocker), and Deonna (Calhoun) had terrific games. It was our best 90 so far."
Bond ended the game with a career-high 13 saves. The goal was Beckwith's first of the season.
The Falcons return home next week where they'll take on Texas A&M International on Thursday before playing St. Mary's on Saturday.
