Falcons Fight at Western New Mexico

Despite their best efforts in the second half, UT Permian Basin fell to Western New Mexico 56-43 Tuesday in Silver City after another slow start.

The Falcon (3-16) offense couldn't get going early before falling into an early hole.  Baskets by Kristian James, Jada Berry and Juliette Akinwole put the Falcons on the board but at the end of the first quarter it was 15-6 Mustangs (7-11).  Chynna Rivera's three-pointer to open the third quarter cut the deficit to six, but it would be as close as the Falcons would get.  Three straight threes by the Mustangs would extend their lead.  A five point swing by Khali Pippins-Tryon drew the Falcons to within 12, but Mustang buckets would send the Falcons into the half down 14.

Both defenses would settle in in the second half as the teams traded points in the low scoring pair of quarters.  The Falcons would outscore the Mustangs 25-24, led by eight points a piece from Pippins-Tryon and Alexandrea Washington.  The Falcons didn't allow a free throw attempt in the second half, while hitting seven of their own.

Pippins-Tryon led the way in scoring once again with 13 points along with six rebounds and five steals.  Washington would add her eight points to go with six boards.

The Falcons return home to take on Texas Woman's on Thursday in Odessa before heading right back on the road to face Eastern New Mexico and West Texas A&M next week.
