Following her 21 point performance on Thursday,
Khali Pippins-Tryon scored 19 points and added eight boards as the Falcons fell in the final minute to Texas A&M Kingsville 78-71.
The Javelinas (7-8) started out grabbing a 9-4 lead before both teams went scoreless for two minutes. A free throw by
Lemia Ntor-Ue followed by baskets from
Kristian James and
Alexandrea Washington sparked a 5-0 Falcon (3-13) run to tie the ballgame. The Javelinas would pull away in the final minute of the quarter and grab a six point lead after the first 10 minutes. The Falcons would continue to battle before
Juliette Akinwole would convert the old fashioned three-point play to make it 20 all. The Javelinas would chip away and grab a slim lead heading into the final moments, then
Teya Morris would lay it in at the buzzer and the Falcons trailed 35-30.Â
Back to back Akinwole buckets to open the second half followed by a Morris three gave the Falcons a one-point lead. The teams would trade points before Pippins-Tryon would drain a three and
Sarah Bersang would follow with a basket of her own to retake the lead for the Falcons. The Javelinas would tie it up again, but the Falcons would answer with a run. Pippins-Tryon and
Chynna Rivera would hit back to back threes, then Washington would hit a lay-up after a Bersang steal to push the Falcon lead to eight. After a small Javelina run, Pippins-Tryon would hit a pair of free throws in the final seconds of the quarter and the Falcons went into the final 10 minutes up 55-50. The Falcon offense would go cold in the fourth quarter, missing their first 13 shots in the quarter as the Javelinas chipped away. Nyachristmas Puok's jumper at 2:37 tied the game at 61 and was the first field goal in the quarter for the Falcons. Pippins-Tryon's three with just over a minute to go gave the Falcons a one-point lead. Cloe Lane would hit a three on the ensuing possession for the Javelinas to retake the lead. Down the stretch the Javelinas went 9-9 from the free throw line to seal the game for the 78-71 final.
Pippins-Tryon had a team-high 19 points to go with her eight rebounds. Bersang would add 12 points, seven rebounds and six assists before fouling out in the final minute. Akinwole finished the afternoon with nine points and six rebounds while battling foul trouble.
The Falcons head on the road next week, first to take on Tarleton State on Thursday, then to Texas A&M Commerce on Saturday.
