Women's Soccer Comeback Falls Short Against Texas A&M International

The UT Permian Basin women's soccer team fell to Texas A&M International 3-2 Sunday in Odessa.

The first half saw both sides have their chances with only UTPB able to break through and score.  Lea Walenta found a loose ball on the side of the net and put it home to give UTPB the 1-0 lead 16:58 into the match.  UTPB had another opportunity when Interntional committed a foul inside the box.  Ariel Roybal hit the post and it bounced and hit the other post before being smothered.  Both sides got the ball on goal with UTPB registering six shots on goal while Texas A&M International had four.

International broke through in the second half.  They tied the game when Cristina Ibarra fielded a rebound in the box and scored.  Five minutes later they scored again when Nicole Cohen headed in a loose ball.  UTPB had a chance to tie off a header by Kalee Overmeyer off a cross but it was knocked away by a defender at the last second.  Samantha Ruiz added another goal on a break away off a pass fro Cio Bargallo to push their lead to 3-1.

UTPB answered almost immediately.  Overmeyer headed in a corner from Lauren Marenco to cut the deficit to 3-2.  After the goal Marenco and Ruiz were each assessed a red card for striking each other as was International assistant coach Solomon Moctezuma for stepping onto the field.  With both sides at 10 for the final minutes UTPB could not push across a tying goal.

UTPB is on the road next week starting with a match-up in Lubbock against Lubbock Christian.
