UT Permian Basin come out with a dominating performance Saturday afternoon in the second day of action at the Margaret Downing Invitational, defeating Union 25-16, 25-11, 18-25, 25-20 before falling to Quincy to end the weekend in Magnolia, Ark.
The Falcons controlled the first match of the day, taking a 9-5 lead on a kill by
Travana Matthews. UTPB pulled ahead 18-10 on a pair of kills by
Analise Lucio and a winner by
Aquincia Strambler. The Falcons won the first set by winning the final three points, getting the 25-16 win on a kill by
Puava Tulau.
After falling behind to start the second set, four straight points found UTPB with a 9-6 lead in the second. A three-point run with kills by
Skyler Friel, Srambler and
Marissa Aguilar put the Falcons ahead 12-7. UTPB raced ahead with five straight points for a 17-8 advantage, and out-scored the Bulldogs 8-3 for the 25-11 set win.
Following a third set loss, the Falcons fought bak after trailing 10-4 in the fourth to win 10 straight points, nine off the serve of
Sarah Vasquez to take a 14-10 lead.
UTPB won the match on a service error to take the 25-20 fourth set victory.
Marissa Aguilar and Strambler led the Falcons with 13 kills each, while Frield added 11 on the afternoon.
Kiera Granando added 28 assists to lead all players, and Vasquez had a game-high 23 digs.
In their second match of the day, the Falcons fell to Quincy while hitting negative for the match.
Matthews and Strambler each ad five kills to lead the Falcons.
Granado lead the Falcons with nine assists, while Vasquez also had nine digs.
The Falcons are back in action next weekend in Austin, Texas, with matches against Purdue Northwest, St. Edward's and Colorado State Pueblo.
