UT Permian Basin baseball is in charge of its own destiny heading in to its last Lone Star Conference series of the season as the Falcons travel to Portales, N.M., for a four-game set against the Greyhounds Friday-Sunday. UTPB currently sits in seventh place at 3-17 in the conference with ENMU and Cameron two games up at 5-15 in 5th and 6th place.
UTPB's easiest path to postseason play is a four-game sweep against ENMU that would guarantee them at least sixth place in the final conference standings or a 3-1 weekend that would leave the two teams tied but would give UTPB the first tiebreaker in head-to-head wins. Aside from that series, the Falcons would need to go at least 2-2 for a potential tie with Cameron or would need two more wins than Cameron on the weekend to at least tie the Aggies in the final standings.
A tie with Cameron would bring into play secondary tiebreakers as the two teams split their season series 2-2. Both teams had the same season record against West Texas A&M and Tarleton State in conference play, so the tiebreaker would come down to either Angelo State or Texas A&M - Kingsville based on the team higher in the standings. Cameron picked up a win over Angelo State earlier in the season while the Falcons went 0-4 against the Rams this past week. Should Cameron get swept by the Javelinas this weekend, UTPBÂ would have the tiebreaker as the Falcons defeated TAMUK on the road in Kingsville.Â
The Falcons and Greyhounds begin play in their four-game series Friday night, with first pitch at Greyhound Field set for 8 p.m.
