Falcons Homer Early, Kingsville Scores Late in 18-8 Loss at LSC Championships

Box Score UT Permian Basin Baseball used the home run ball to take a lead two different times, but Texas A&M Kingsville scored the final 12 runs of the game as the Javelinas defeated the Falcons 18-8 in the first round of the Lone Star Conference Basecall Championships.

Chris Ortega and Mitchell Hazlett started the game out with a pair of blasts that left the park, both hitting their fourth home runs of the season on nearly identical hits over the high wall in left field for a 2-0 lead over Kingsville after two at bats.

The Javelina offense broke out in their first time to the plate as the first five Kingsville batters reached on four hits and a walk to score five runs, including a bases-loaded double to left center by Christian Caudle that scored three for a 5-2 lead after one.

Mike Fernandez hit the team's third home run of the game, blasting a two-run shot deep to left center in the top of the third to pull within a run at 5-4. 

Fernandez later scored in the top of the fifth to pull the team back within a run again, scoring from third when Dalton Drury grounded out to first.

The Falcons tied the game at 6-6, leading off the top of the sixth with an Andrew Donovan single back up the middle and he came in to score when Tylor Frailey singled to center field and the ball was bobbled. 

Fernandez drove in his third run of the game three batters later as Frailey crossed home for a 7-6 lead, and Drury drove home Hazlett for an 8-6 advantage.

Texas A&M Kingsville came back with a flury in the bottom half of the inning, scoring seven runs off of six hits to claim the final lead change of the game and go on top 13-8 before adding five additional runs in the final two innings.

Fernandez led UTPB with three RBI and a pair of runs, going 3-5 at the dish with a home run. Hazlett added three runs and an RBI with a pair of hits and a HMP. Andrew Donovan went 3-5, scoring a run.

Matt Williams was big out of the bullpen, entering in the bottom of the first and throwing four innings of one-run ball. He gave up five hits and walked none while striking out four. 

Caudle led the Javelinas, racking up six RBI with a pair of runs on four hits. Seven different Javelinas scored at least a pair of runs on the day.

Texas A&M Kingsville ended the game with 22 hits as a team and four walks, while the Falcons collected 14 hits while also reaching base on free passes four times.
