Baseball Splits Series at Cameron

UT Permian Basin (6-27, 2-6) finished its series with Cameron (15-20, 5-7) with a split in a double header on Monday in Lawton, OK.  Cameron took the first game 8-7 while UTPB's bats dominated in an 11-2 victory, registering a season-high 17 hits.

UTPB jumped out to an early 2-0 lead through three innings on Cameron in game one.  Skyler Palermo walked with the bases loaded in the first inning and Alex Wixson had an RBI single in the third.  Cameron's offense broke out in the fourth scoring seven runs with the big blow coming on a Cole Williams grand slam.  UTPB got a run back in the sixth on a Tony Oslovar single to make it 7-3.

The UTPB offense would go to work in their last at bat of the seven inning game.  Andrew Donovan cut the lead in half with a two-run double to make it 7-5.  After a couple of walks to load the bases, Mitchell Hazlett drove in the tying run on a two-run single capping off a four run comeback.  The game would go into extra innings where Luke Hughes would end it with a single in the ninth for the 8-7 final.

UTPB's bats would stay hot in the second game.  Dalton Drury opened up the scoring by knocking in Oslovar with a double in the first inning.  Mike Fernandez would come into score on a passed ball to make it 2-0.  Hazlett would pick up another RBI in the second with a single of his own and that was all starting pitcher Ivan Thomas would need.  The offense added two more in the third on a Chris Ortega walk and an Oslovar single to make it 5-0.  Cameron would get a run back in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly.

UTPB would continue to add on with another pair of runs in the fourth on a Cooper Coe fielder's choice and a Donovan single.  They would add three in the sixth and another in the eighth to make it 11-1 before Cameron would add one in the eighth to make it 11-2.

Nick Bartley took the loss in game one to drop his record to 1-3 on the season while giving up one run in 1.2 innings.  Tyler Averitt was brilliant in relief throwing 3.2 innings and striking out four while only allowing three hits.  Skyler Henderson improved to 3-2 for Cameron.

Thomas picked up his first win of the season in the second game for UTPB.  He went seven strong innings only allowing one run on three hits.  Matt Symczak finished the game going two innings and allowing one run.  Alex Ward suffered the loss for Cameron.

Donovan led the UTPB offense, which had 32 hits on the day, with six of his own.  That includes a pair of doubles, four runs scored and three RBI.  Hazlett added five hits of his own with four RBI and a pair of runs scored.  Oslovar had four hits and three RBI in the lead-off spot.  Drury, Wixson and Ortega each added three hits to the effort.

UTPB returns home for a four game conference series with Tarleton State starting Friday in Odessa.
