UT Permian Basin softball combined for 34 hits and 26 runs Saturday afternoon in a pair of games against Western New Mexico, defeating the Mustangs 14-13 and 12-7 in Odessa.
Vanessa Alonzo and Lizzie Souza each ended the day with six hits in eight at bats; Alonzo tied with the team lead Saturday with four RBI while Souza scored four runs.
UTPB fought back after a six run top of the first by the Mustangs in the opener, rebounding to trail 9-8 on a two-RBI double by
Ashlynn Williams.
The Falcons didn't lead until winning the game in the bottom of the 7th. Trailing 13-8, The Falcons got two runs back in the sixth on a pair of RBIs by April Arellano and Alonzo.Â
Aubreel Avila doubled to score a run in the seventh to trail by a run, and
Adrianna Berzoza won the game with a two-run double that scored Avila and Savannah Medina.
Cindy Juarez picked up the win in relief, throwing 6.1 innings with 10 hits and no walks allowed.Â
Souza and Alonzo each led the Falcons with three hits in game one, Alonzo with three RBI and Berzoza with three runs scored.
UTPBÂ led early in the first in game two, scoring four with a pair of RBI by Arellano and one each off the bats of Williams and Alonzo.Â
Trailing later in the game 7-6, the Falcons came through with six runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a five-run lead.
A Souza triple to right scored a pair of runs, and she was followed later in the inning by back-to-back home runs from Jessica Gonzalez and Cindy Juarez. Williams later singled to left to drive in the team's 12th run of the game.
Aubree Avila picked up her third win of the season, throwing the final four innings and allowing a pair of runs off of three hits and a walk.
Souza ended game two with three hits, two RBI and three runs scored. Williams had three hits and two runs while driving in a pair.
