Falcons Unable to Hold Lead in Finale against Texans

UT Permian Basin (6-31, 2-10) dropped the final game of a four game series with Tarleton State (27-13, 12-4) by a score of 14-11 Monday in Odessa.

UTPB jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning on a Simon Clarke single with the bases loaded. Tarleton would tie the score in the third on a two-run single by Ruben Rodriguez.

UTPB's offense would go to work in the bottom of the third inning. With two-on and two-out, Cooper Coe doubled to left field to drive in a run. Chris Ortega would follow that up two batters later with a two-run single to make it 5-2. They would get a pair of runs with the bases loaded when Mitchell Hazlett was hit by a pitch and Mike Fernandez walked. Skyler Palermo would then drive in a pair with a single to make it 9-2.

Tarleton chipped away at the lead with a run in the fourth and two in the fifth. Tarleton would then score nine in the seventh inning to take a 14-9 lead. The big blow coming on an Elvin Alamo two-run single with the game tied at nine. UTPB would try to mount a comeback of their own. Coe would drive in another run with a double in the eighth and Tony Oslovar would follow that with a sacrifice fly to make it 14-11.

Nick Bartley (1-4) took the loss for UTPB while Connor Flannigan (2-0) picked up the win for the Texans. Flannigan went 3.1 scoreless innings striking out seven. Andrew Loudermilk went 2.1 innings without allowing a run for the Falcons.

Palermo led the Falcons with four hits on the day along with a pair of RBI and runs scored. Clarke had three hits with a pair of RBI and runs scored. Coe had two doubles and two RBI while scoring a run. Ortega had two RBI for the Falcons as well.

UTPB heads out on the road to take on Texas A&M – Kingsville in a four game series in a Lone Star Conference match-up starting Friday
