Tarleton State Bats Hot in Sunday Doubleheader

UT Permian Basin (6-29, 2-8) couldn't stop the bats of Tarleton State (25-13, 10-4) dropping both games of a double-header on Sunday. They lost the first game 12-0 and the second game 16-4.

Tarleton got off to a hot start in the first game when lead-off hitter Blake Adams hit an opposite field home run. Tarleton would add two more in the second inning and then four in the third including a two-run home run by Luke Morton to make it 7-0. They would score two more in the fifth and three more in the seventh to make the final 12-0.

The Texans would jump out in game two in the second inning scoring a pair. They would add two more on a two-run home run by Adams in the third to make it 4-0. Tarleton would continue to add to their lead with a four run fourth inning.

UTPB struck back in the bottom half of the fourth. With two outs, Simon Clarke and Cooper Coe would hit back to back singles. Andrew Donovan would follow them with an RBI-double to make it 8-1. The next batter, Chris Ortega, would then hit a three-run home run, his first of the season to cut the lead to 8-4. Tarleton would answer with five in the fifth and three in the sixth while holding UTPB scoreless for the 16-4 final.

Owen Bessette (1-3) and Alex Rivera (2-4) each took the loss for the Falcons. Nathan Hickey (8-1) and Sid Payan (1-1) picked up the wins for the Texans with Payan's coming in relief.

Donovan led the Falcons with three hits on the day along with a run scored and an RBI. Simon Clarke also had three hits including a pinch-hit double in game one. Mike Fernandez added a pair of hits as did Mitchell Hazlett. Tony Oslovar and Alex Wixson each had a double in the first game.

The two teams finish off their four game series Monday at 1 p.m. in Odessa. UTPB will then travel to take on Texas A&M – Kingsville next weekend in a four game series.
