UT Permian Basin baseball led late and went extra innings in game one with #9 West Texas A&M, and were able to bring the winning run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh in game two, but dropped a pair of 9-6 and 7-5 Lone Star Conference games to the Buffs Saturday afternoon at Roden Field in Odessa.
The Falcons came back after trailing early in the first game of the day. Down 3-0 after three runs in the top of the third for West Texas A&M, UTPB answered with three of its own. Mitchell Hazlett doubled to drive in Dalton Drury, Alex Wixson singled to score Hazlett, and he later came in on a two-bagger by Tony Oslovar to even game one at 3-3.
David Fetkenher gave the Falcons their first lead of the day in the fourth, scoring Chris Ortega on an outfield single to right.
UTPBÂ added to its lead with a pair of unearned runs in the fifth;
Mike Fernandez coming home on a fielder's choice by Tyler Frailey where the Buffs got a force out at second, and Frailey scoring on an infield error.
Trailing by three, WT tied the game in the top of the sixth, scoring its first of the inning on a balk, adding a second on an error, and tying the game on a double by Nick Canas.
Canas put WT ahead in the top of the 11th on an infield single that scored a run from third. The Buffs added two more in the frame for the eventual 9-6 win.
Alex Wixson led a group of five Falcons with at least two hits in game one, going 3-4 at the plate
Nick Bartley threw five scoreless innings in relief for UTPB, giving up three hits and one walk with a pair of strikeouts.
Dominic Yearego went the final 7.2 innings to improve to 3-0 on the season, giving up a pair of unearned runs on six hits with five strikeouts.
Playing from behind again in game two, UTPB cut into three Buff runs in the top of the first when Dalton Drury scored on a wild pitch and Hazlett came in on a double play to trail 3-2 after the first inning.
Fernandez tied the game with a double into center to bring home Hazlett from first to knot the game at 3-3 after three.
Two runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings by the Buffs, three of them driven in by Tommy Williams, helped West Texas to a 7-3 advantage.
Cooper Coe roped a line drive back up the middle in the bottom of the fifth to drive in Hazlett to trail 7-4.
The Falcons loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh with no outs, and scored one in the inning when Fernandez took a ball to the warning track in left field. UTPB stranded the potential tying run when WT got out of the inning on a strike out and infield pop up to end the game.
The Falcons and Buffs wrap up the four-game series Saturday afternoon, with first pitch set for 1 p.m.
